Irish Public Can See Gold Bullion Bar at Trinity Science Exhibition

Irish people have a rare opportunity to get within touching distance and see a gold bullion bar at the Trinity Science Exhibition. The ‘Elements: The Beauty of Chemistry’ exhibition opened on Friday in the Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and runs from July 15th until September 23rd.

At the exhibition young and old can experience the beauty of the elements and get close to and see a real gold bullion bar mined, refined and minted in Western Australia.

Participants can also have fun by getting the "ingredient list" of what constitutes your body. They can see Arsenic wallpaper, liquid nitrogen bananas and a diamond ring made from the cremated ashes of a 68-year old man from Florida. There is also an interesting work of art of a lead bullet that has been transformed into a lovely work of art.

These are just some of the elements on show as chemistry meets art and beauty this summer in the Trinity Science Gallery.

The gold bar was donated to Trinity for the event by GoldCore, the Irish wealth manager and international bullion dealer based in Dublin.

"This is a fun and enlightening event for all the family and I would encourage people to go to the Elements Exhibition. Irish people’s only experience of gold is through wedding rings, jewellery and seeing the gold bars in Fort Knox in the James Bond movie Goldfinger," said Mark O’Byrne of GoldCore.

"In the same way that very people in Ireland and internationally own gold bullion so too very, very few people in the world will ever have seen or got within touching distance of a 24-carat gold bullion bar," continued O’Byrne.

The Perth Mint of Western Australia gold bar weighs exactly 10 ounces and is worth over €11,000 as the price of gold rose to new nominal record highs in euros (€1,122 per ounce) and dollars (£1,595 per ounce) on economic concerns this week.

"Shaun O’Boyle from Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin said that "gold is unique, lasts forever and is very rare and it is for this reason that national reserves of wealth are still stored in gold. Gold is thus one of the most precious of the metals and this is a rare experience for Irish people to get close to and see a 24 carat, 0.9999 pure gold bar."

The award-winning YouTube video, GoldNomics, will also be shown at the event. It shows how gold is a form of money that has retained value throughout history. It has gone viral and received over 120,000 views in just over 6 months – making it the most watched video about gold in the world so far in 2011.

Besides being able to see a gold bar, visitors to ELEMENTS will have an opportunity to directly experience the mysteries of the atomic world, with a chance to explore in fun ways the diverse elements of the periodic table and their unique properties.
